Build an AI product-description workflow for your catalog

A product catalog needs descriptions that reflect what each item contains, how it differs and what the store can support. Norml builds a workflow that prepares product-copy drafts using approved attributes and your writing rules. Catalog editors review the text with its supporting fields before any description is updated. Missing specifications stay visible instead of becoming invented selling points.

Connect product facts to reviewed descriptions

We scope one catalog and one destination first. A Shopify implementation can use its product API for description updates; another commerce platform needs its own field and permission check.

Trigger
A catalog owner selects products for drafting after their required source attributes pass validation.
Outcome
Prepare product-specific descriptions for review, then update only approved catalog fields while recording skipped items, conflicts and failures.

Define the allowed product facts

Map materials, dimensions, compatibility, care instructions and other relevant attributes to approved source fields. Specify which are required for each product type. Images or a product name alone must not establish certifications, safety claims or performance guarantees.

Draft within the catalog structure

Use category-specific writing rules and distinguish product-level statements from variant attributes. Show each draft beside the fields that informed it. Products with incomplete or conflicting specifications enter a correction queue for the catalog owner.

Apply approved copy to the right item

Match records using stable product IDs and retain the approved source version. Limit writes to agreed description fields. Check for intervening edits, record the prior text and verify each result; a failed item should not force the whole batch to repeat.

Bring the attributes, rules and review owner

A dependable product source

Provide sample products with their identifiers and specifications, including difficult variants. Name the authoritative source when supplier sheets and store fields disagree. Catalog cleanup may be needed before drafting is useful.

Store access for selected fields

Confirm API access, scopes and the destination fields. Shopify description updates require product-write access. Pricing, stock, product handles and publication status stay outside this scope unless separately agreed.

An editor who can approve claims

Supply voice examples, prohibited wording and any required product disclosures. Assign someone who understands the catalog to check factual claims. Agree how product data may be processed and retained by the selected model provider.

Validate one category before running a batch

  1. Map representative products

Compare a simple item, a variant-heavy item and an incomplete record. Agree required fields and the product identity used throughout drafting and updates.

  2. Review generated descriptions

Build a review view with source attributes and proposed text. Test whether the draft adds unsupported details or loses distinctions between similar products.

  3. Test controlled catalog writes

Run an approved sample, then test a changed source, an editor conflict and a failed update. Hand over item-level results, retry rules and the method for restoring earlier copy.

Product-description workflow questions

Why build this if Shopify already generates descriptions?
Shopify includes native AI description assistance. We first check whether that meets the need. A separate workflow is useful when your catalog requires external source mapping, category rules, batch review or a controlled handoff that the current process does not provide.
Can it fill in missing specifications?
No. Missing materials, dimensions, compatibility and certifications require an approved source. The workflow flags the affected item and can draft only the sections supported by the available attributes.
Will descriptions be published automatically?
A catalog editor approves the proposed text before the agreed description fields are updated. The scope does not change product publication status. A rejected or outdated draft remains outside the store update queue.
Does this include translation or SEO guarantees?
Translation requires separate language review and terminology rules. Search metadata can be scoped as distinct fields, but rankings and conversion gains are not guaranteed. The core deliverable is traceable product copy and a tested update process.
Bring sample products, their source attributes and the copy your team wants to maintain. We will check the missing data and define a reviewed batch workflow.
