AI

Polish was the product. The product is now free.

It's time for design studios to stop charging $20k for what takes AI 20 minutes.

Look at what Claude Design, Lovable, v0, Bolt, and Framer AI actually do. They all pull from the same pool. Same layouts. Same components. Same spacing. Same "clean and modern."

A grid of sixteen AI-startup landing pages side by side: near-identical purple and lavender gradients, centered bold headlines, pill-shaped violet buttons and the same clean SaaS layout, repeated across every page.
Sixteen landing pages, one pool. Same layouts, same components, same spacing.

So yes, every SaaS homepage is starting to look the same. Every dashboard looks like it was designed by the same person, because it kind of was. Every landing page "feels right" but none of them stick.

A lot of people are calling this the moment AI commoditized design

It didn't. It just made it obvious what most studios were actually selling.

Clean and modern. Competent execution. The polish that signals "we know what we're doing." That was the line on the proposal. Polish was the product.

The product is now free.

Studios that built their whole brand on "we do clean and modern, better" are about to find out they didn't have a brand. They had a process. And the process is a commodity now.

What survives isn't taste

What survives is judgment, domain, and point of view.

  • Judgment is why this layout, not that one, for this business.
  • Domain is knowing the industry well enough to know what the user actually needs to see.
  • Point of view is whether you'd push back on the brief, or just execute it.

None of those come from a prompt.

They come from sitting in rooms ¯\(ツ)/¯
